OUGD404 // Final Small Publication

Unfortunately in the transportation of my CMYK publication I accidentally creased the cover and inside introduction page, leaving a noticeable ridge. As this goes against the sleek modernist style I wanted to explore, I created a tracing paper sleeve to encase the booklet, subtly hiding the imperfections in print finish, alongside protecting the booklet from further damage. After seeing how fragile the books can be on thin stock, it definitely makes me want to plan ahead in the future, bringing forms of transportation for work avoiding this happening again.

Unfortunately it was not possible to hardback the book the way I would have liked under the limitations, partly due to ill-considered time management and planning of print slots/bookbinding time slots. Many of the pages were also cropped way too far, despite having crop marks in place. Initially I hand cut each page in turn with a craft knife which proved a greater success than the test print booklet. However, I still had some untidy edges poking out and hastily removed them with the same technique taught in the bookbinding induction, lightly scoring pages to cut through a stack. This has essentially ruined my publication, cutting off the last few words in places (White page), making the body of type unreadable.

Final outcome for Studio Brief 01, a beginners guide to CMYK and negative space. The final print finish is not what I had planned and would be much more effective hard backed with a de-boss on the cover/back cover. As another form of protection I opted for placing the booklet into a transparent sleeve, maintaining visibility yet adding a more sophisticated feel. Despite the print finish I am happy with the editorial outcome I created, exploring double page spreads, negative space to suggest a uxorious tone of voice and investigating CMYK. The brief has also provided me with valuable experience in the production and manufacturing of books. If I pushed myself further I feel this publication could have been exceptional, yet due to poor planning and appointment making it is slightly below my expectations due to the final finish.
