Angela Luna, 22 and recent graduate of Parsons School of Art & Design, NYC has designed a full clothing collection, centred around use for refugees. Some of her garments can be convert into TENTS, sleeping bags, and flotation devices, all constructed into high fashion, modern designs. Luna had been studying eveningwear but had a change of heart after hearing about the plight of refugees. The garments are unisex, one-size-fits-all designs, which all have functional elements such as reflective material, flotation capabilities, or insulation.
Angela plans to follow TOMS footwear model, using the proceeds of pieces sold to make and donate similar products to refugees oversees.
- She hopes to sell them to campers and hikers at sporting goods stores and use the profits to fund the donation process, however I really question how the garments will be distributed to refugee's or people in actual need, because the physical situ of the refugee's will be away from high street/city stores, often without any access to the internet or any digital modes of communication where the products would be distributed, making the product somewhat ineffective. Fleeing from homes and leaving all possessions behind also means leaving behind money, so I wonder how solution idea would be affordable for real people in need.
However, she spent a lot of time finding the materials to make each of her designs work in the real world, winning the Parsons Womenswear designer of the year award in the process.
