OUGD505: Crit + Feedback

The crit was successful in establishing a defined need in this issue, as well as getting advice from tutors into the development, with Simon Jones advising that this is a viable problem (which is encouraging), yet should be a tool to facilitate collaboration, not just turn into another social platform.

This is a problem I have identified personally within Leeds College of Art, yet can be expanded to larger fields and can be extended as a platform helping creatives and businesses recruiting, as well as students within the creative industries.

ISSUE: There is no current way of finding collaborative partners near you, or facilitating successful collaborative practice.

I asked, do you see any problems within the idea? (The people in the feedback group are all part of the effected target audience, so confirming what they'd find beneficial is essential to the success of the solution).
  • It would be helpful if the software generated the partners from you, based on tags within their work compared to your interests (have a profile system to personalise the app/website
  • Could neglect the aspects of that person- it doesn't mean they're a good person to work with
  • Set alarm for when e.g. an architect, wants a graphic designer
  • Could set alerts for group meetings, and send alerts to collaborative partners not contributing as much
  • Build in alerts for group events, sent to everyone
  • Facilitate the whole team- sharing files
  • Ability to send creative cloud files would be really helpful! Google drive offers file sharing but it takes ages to upload and often won't download on other mediums
  • Help with time management, a calendar or diary function would be helpful
  • Can preset projects you'd like to work on, like a 'save for later'
  • Partner people based on mutual likes from other social platforms, e.g. 'You both liked Malika Favre's work for The Guardian on Its Nice That'.
  • Finding people quickly is hard, thats why people just stay in their little groups
What do you think of the current LCA Facebook page? Do you use it?
  • The current LCA Facebook page gets drowned out by people being 'I NEED A MODEL TOMORROW', echoing desperation
  • Current LCA Facebook is a good place to find work and get feedback
  • Mostly surveys
  • At least 5 people said they have turned off the notifications and don't even check it anymore
I asked, do you think the interface would work better on an app or website platform?
  • Website over app- see images clearer on a larger screen
  • Website is more serious as this is where you are situated when you do work
  • Website is more accessible to all, not restrictive or elitist to those with a smartphone
  • App for quickly finding people near you (tinder style is a good idea- Nicky Hope, specialising in interface design)
  • Keep it to the point- immediate outcome
Possibilities for product, range, distribution?
  • Product - Interface to facilitate collaboration within the creative industries (but expandable to other sectors, e.g. Sciences, engineering specialists etc).
  • Range - Marketing collateral inc, social media content to advertise the interface. Packs to distribute to uni's with stickers etc to tag around campus/put on Apple mac's etc.
  • Distribution - Online and on phones, could be set up as a database plug in within institutions

The feedback was really useful for finding out what people think of the current way we find collaborative partners, and the thought process that we do work at a computer screen is leading the development to suitably lead to a web solution, adaptable for App mobile platforms.

The premise is a combination of Facebook messenger, Linked In's professionalism, Behance's creative platform and connection to the creative cloud, and possibly Tinder's style of geographic interface, with simplicity and beauty created in ease of use and ultimately experience. The feedback identified the current solution (LCA Collaborations page) is not successful as it is ultimately a stressful experience. The solution needs to be a stress-free experience, acting as a useful tool helping the user in many ways.

How the brief has developed. Additional research needed.
