OUGD504: Considering the Developer

As screen based design isn't really an area I planned to get in to, the role of a developer would play a big part in future digital projects. I have learn't over time that moving image and motion graphics is not my forte, so collaborating with an animation student could be a possible way to execute it in the mean time.

I wanted to explore i) the role of the developer, and ii) potential developers accessible to me.

The role of a web developer

  • Writing well designed, testable, efficient code by using best software development practices
  • Creating website layout/user interfaces by using standard HTML/CSS practices
  • Integrating data from various back-end services and databases
  • Gather and refine specifications and requirements based on technical needs
  • Create and maintain software documentation
  • Be responsibile for maintaining, expanding, and scaling our site
  • Stay plugged into emerging technologies/industry trends and apply them into operations and activities
  • Cooperate with web designers to match visual design intent
People by the hour is a way of hiring freelancers by the hour. I imagine that the communication between a freelancer and yourself would be improved, helping with the design decisions throughout the process. The risk when turning to a larger company or a growing LTD is getting peoples secretaries/voicemails/out of hours set backs and worries.  I could also ask Geraint Roberts, the author I interviewed for the Type in Context brief to ask to get in touch with his iBook developer, as he may have lateral skills in web design or know somebody who can. This means an oversea's operation, adding a broader international scope to the development.

Companies in West Yorkshire

Cool Beans Creative Design, based in Leeds LS9. They work closely with the client to give them the finest execution in exactly what you need. In addition, what sets Cool Beans apart from other companies is that we take time to understand your intentions. However, this may mean a conflict of idea's if working with another trained designer. Regardless of any creative disputes, this would be a really good chance to discuss my idea's with a working creative and hopefully learn from their input along the way. The experience Cool Beans have means the animations, page linking, transitions, zooms and opacities are all well within their reach, and they even say "no job is too small!". This means the aesthetic design decisions/qualities will be carried through, alongside the wireframes and site maps. By producing through Cool Beans, they will be able to really understand the intention of 'stress free'.

Another option to connect with freelance developers.

A website Leeds Geeks (@LeedsGeeks) is an independently run website acting as 'The What's On guide for Leeds geeks'. Despite amusingly named, they offer a range of meet ups and social events, connecting designers and developers together. This could prove a cheaper option for a start up company, due to mutually beneficial situations or cheaper costs as no agency fee's.

I highlighted some events as a potential area's to gather knowledge and insight into developing the solution. Mainly, I need somebody to develop the coding, animatics and HTML components. Due to time restraints since starting this brief, it would be difficult to access one of these events. The closest one is 3rd Wednesday of the month (18th January), 8 days after submission.
