Design for Screen - Research 02: Primary Research (Focus Groups)

In preparation for my own solution, I asked 2 sets of focus groups questions (and had a general discussion) to gain further insight. One focus group was made up of students aged 17-21 and a group of working professionals aged 21-29 & 53-57 as a secondary target audience.

I asked - How they go about finding properties, for either immediate or future use?

What functions they feel would be useful when finding a property?

How they feel current experiences are? What can be done to minimise the stress, and overall user experience?

The results came back as followed..

I incorporated two persona's, based on the focus group conducted. This is to see how they would interact with the interface so I can explore the most effective way to design it.

Most people browse properties in an official setting, generally somewhere with printer access or a workspace for writing down notes. The younger side of the demographic also said laptops, and the older saying a PC or Mac screen. Either way, 3 people said mobile devices, and only one person mentioned an App. It was not that the focus group was negative towards mobile browsing, they simply stated from their own experience.

Despite some estate agents getting apps, it seems that trust needs to be instilled- so perhaps a browser with a compatible mobile function would be more suitable.

Top desirables

Price - per week / per month (generally per month as people prefer to work in yearly quarters).

Location - Distance to/from local amenities, such as university, shops and friends houses.

Postcode searches were favourable, especially when considering the Leeds area. Students generally want to stay within the LS3-LS6 range, whereas young professionals favour LS6 and LS1 postcodes more than the mid-section.

Pictures of the property - The room you could be in, the kitchen, bathroom etc.

What you're getting for your money- If Bill Included, what bills? If not Bills included, assistance on how to set this up. Many student letting companies do all inclusive bills- information on what this includes and if your property is eligible.

Short term/Long term lets

Overall Quality of property and letting agents- perhaps a star rating system or personal reviews

Ease of use and Accessibility
