OUGD503: Investigating Cocktails

Greenalls Cocktails

All quite simplistic in their approach to cocktail making. Ease to make and purposeful ingredients (not asking for loads of unnecessary things). There are currently only 5 cocktails featured on the Greenalls website, compared to 30+ on competitor Hendrix's. The breadth of product range can be expanded here, utilising more Gins than just The Original and Wild Berry.

Nations Favourite Cocktails- In order to develop a new range/add to Greenalls range of cocktails at the minuet, its essential to see what popular trends are drinks wise.

According to The Telegraph and multiple other online sources, the nations favourite cocktail is the Pina Colada - rum based drink so not applicable for Greenalls. Other drinks on the list are also based around fruit and white rum, so the flavours may not mix as well. The cocktails need to be an extension of Greenalls personality, so not be sickly or related to 'woo woo' girl connotations.

Other drinks classed as 'the nations favourite' (or in the top 10) are

  • Margarita
  • Mojito   Gin Mojito
  • Martini
  • Cosmopolitan
  • Whiskey Sour
  • Manhattan
  • Long Island Ice Tea

  • As you can see from the strikethroughs above, none of the nations favourites are Gin based, yet have the possibility to be reinvented. Greenalls have adapted flavoured gins, incorporated Ginger Beer and done their own take on a mojito- showing an influence from cocktail mixers by the expansion of ingredients and flavours.

It could be interesting to play around with the colour ways within cocktails and photographic set ups, maybe informing a cocktail identity showing key combination flavours as an expansion of the Greenalls image, derived from its heritage.

Gin Cucumber Martinis3 cucumber slices, 6 mint leaves, 60ml gin, 15ml elderflower cordial

    Britain in a glass

Earl Grey Martini made with Gin and cold Earl Grey tea- however one could question the taste! There has also been a Werthers Original gin made (strong British signifier), adding toffee to the new list of flavours possible in some ways.

If this was to be expanded, the production and creation of these drinks would be done by an actual bar team to perfect the measurements right for Greenalls. I had a quick go making my own cocktails informed from the recipes and ingredients mentioned, I wanted to find something different from the likes of Hendrixs' cucumber melody, and incorporate a 'British garden' flavour- possibly through floral scents off balanced with hints of bitterness.

Greenalls portable distribution service- aesthetically flat in dimension and void of character, but sleek and well designed interior none the less. This capitalises on creating an experience- cocktail waiter treys, napkins, collectables could all have branding running across it. (Could expand to redesign these visuals, or create collapsable/reusable plastic cocktail glass)

The whole idea of exploring and incorporating cocktails is to possibly incorporate/expand on current lively attitudes towards and festivals, creating more good times.

    Test shoot:

Using the idea of 'summertime' and fruity flavours, I thought it would be interesting to incorporate the ingredients and fruit into typography, possibly informing branding. Sadly the images from the Canon 5D got deleted due to a corrupt hard drive, but I experimented with making cocktails for Greenalls to inform print/social media collateral, and aid future mock ups of ideas.

Hand rendered type from green food colouring and sugar syrup. Shadow of specialist Gin glass (in this case looks more like a wine glass). The delicate nature of the type combined with the fruits, suggests a very English country rusticness. This colour palette is relatively flat but crisp, similar to Greenalls- more colour could be incorporated

    Unsuccessful attempt at Cucumber typography

Mango Gin Fizz I created, compiled of gin, rum,  mango puree, mint, sugar syrup topped with soda water. Alongside this I created a little hand rendered typographic composition as a place matt, highlighting the date as the key feature, despite its ambiguity within the design itself.

Experimenting with green food colouring painting type. After it didn't come out so good, I turned it on its side and experimented with running lines and fluidity. This experiment didn't come out so well and I won't continue this in the future.
Going onto the next shoot, I plan to experiment more with Art Direction and colour, taking inspiration from M&S product photography.
