OUGD404 // Bookbinding Induction

The bookbinding induction had us exploring different ways of hand binding a book, using simplistic traditional methods. The first binding method (green book) was a sew-bind publication. This was the easiest method out of methods, as it only required 3 holes and a simple sewing techniques. This binding is quite suitable for Studio Brief 02 (Look book), whilst being aesthetically more interesting than stapling the pages together. The use of sewing also relates to the subject content itself, clothes and fashion. To get the correct tension on the thread it was imperative to either use masking tape to tac the untied thread in place, or continuously increase the tension throughout the method.

The second binding (black book) has subtle hints to Japanese style bookbinding. This method was relatively easy again once your mind was around the structure of the thread groups as a whole. I am pleased with the outcome that I produced, as it does successfully keep the shape of a Japanese bookbinding with the right amount of tension in the thread- enough to open each page fully but not enough to tear. I personally prefer this method of bookbinding over the traditional stab-sew bind as it is easier to make the wholes in perfect line. This aids the tactility whilst increasing professionally and gives the possibility of creating a perfectly straight line. I am unsure how to transcend this onto vertical publications without pre-planning and adding an extra 2/3cm for binding room, perhaps this may be most effective for smaller horizontal publications?
